Is GeoBase a technical system in the literal sense? Yes and no. The research leading up to this point in the GeoBase Initiative clearly reveals the connotations of the term 'system', especially as viewed by the SC and commercial sectors. The fact of the matter is that the majority of installations already have at least one or more organizations within the host wing that have already procured, implemented and employed geospatial IT to support the mission. Given that all installations have already invested to varying degrees in geospatial IT, the challenge is to provide a mechanism or process for organizing the geospatial information so that it may be shared with others across the wing. The adoption of established spatial data standards weigh heavily in this regard. However, there are also significant benefits to establishing a long-term target systems architecture for the entire Air Force to keep in their scopes as they migrate their current architectures. One such benefit is the unified training and education gained by a single architecture and the resultant efficiencies and increased effectiveness in our Expeditionary Air Force. So, what is the answer? While the focus and emphasis is on the process of organizing and managing geospatial data, the Air Force is working on a change to the Joint Technical Architecture-Air Force (JTA-AF) which defines a single GeoBase target architecture for all Air Force installations and MAJCOMs to migrate towards. « Return to FAQ List club hotel chisinau |
