How does the USAF GeoBase Initiative relate to the Civil Engineer's Automated Civil Engineer System (ACES) managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency (AFCESA)?

IITA and AFCESA have been informally teaming since Dec 98 with the goal of developing a standard methodology for providing a georeferenced mission space view in future versions of ACES. Lt. Colonel Dave Gaitros, USAF (now retired) was serving as the AFCESA POC for the ACES development program in late 1997 and began discussing possible aLt.ernatives with Lt. Col. Cullis. Unfortunately, this initial partnering momentum was lost with Lt. Col. Gaitros' Mar 99 retirement. To date, there has been no focused effort or investment to build a standard methodology for tying the ACES architecture to existing COTS geographic information systems. However, it should be noted that USAF and contracted personnel have already developed their own customized means for georeferencing some of the ACES databases. The new GeoBase Initiative does offer a new opportunity to develop a standard methodology for linking the ACES relational database schema to those relational databases supporting GIS. Discussions of how to establish closer operational ties between the USAF GeoBase Initiative and the ongoing ACES development will take place at the 1-2 Nov 99 Civil Engineer Automation Steering Group Meeting at Tyndall AFB.
